Yesterday marked ten years since the sinking of The Queen of the North near Gil Island off the central west coast of BC on March 22, 2006.
The ferry ran aground in the middle of the night while sailing from Prince Rupert to Port Hardy with 101 people onboard. Residents of the nearby village of Hartley Bay were honoured by the Governor General for rescuing 99 passengers and crew.
On this sombre anniversary, I am reminded of the role Hawkair played in helping the Heroes of Hartley Bay by flying the rescuers to their ceremony with the Lieutenant Governor in Victoria. Ten years later we continue to value the same Courage and Selflessness demonstrated by the Heroes of Harley Bay.
